Message from President Glenys MacRae
Hello all, here we are still in Covid land with another season of disrupted orchid shows. The majority of shows from Northland through to the Central North Island have been cancelled although some Societies are planning to hold a smaller show in either late October or November. To those Societies who will still be able to hold their show I wish you a successful day. Commiserations to the Tauranga Orchid Society who had to cancel its 40th Anniversary celebrations again! Such a shame, we were looking forward to it. Until we are able to meet again keep well and pamper your orchids.

Vales
Peter Black passed away at his home in Otaki on August 13 aged 85. He was the son of Kath Black who was a stalwart member of several orchid societies for many years before her passing. Palmerston North’s Conservatory at The Esplanade is named after Peter’s grandfather, also Peter Black.
Miriam Corban, QSO passed away on August 27 aged 94. Miriam joined the NZOS in 1952 with her husband Assid and both became judges in the NZOS judging system. Miriam was a life member of the NZOS and for some years was the club’s patron. Although the Corbans grew Cymbidiums, Paphiopedilums were Miriam’s true passion, and she was a very knowledgeable judge on that subject. Miriam was 95.
Rudolf Jenny who was a speaker at our 2010 Expo in Palmerston North died suddenly at his home in Switzerland on August 10 aged 68. Read an obituary here.
Nancie Bonham died suddenly on September 24, aged 96. She was the widow of past OCNZ executive member Dennis Bonham, and mother to Martin. Nancie always accompanied Martin to National Orchid Expos where he operated the computerised judging system. Nancie and Dennis were co-authors of the 1990 book A History of Orchid Growers in New Zealand, published by OCNZ.
