OCNZ NEWSLETTER: OCTOBER 2020

It is wonderful to see orchid shows being held again around the regions. Glenis Day posted photos on Facebook of the Manawatu Orchid Society Spring Show which was held last weekend. It looked like there was a great range of orchids on display. The OCNZ executive wishes all of the Orchid Societies holding shows this month a successful and enjoyable time.

Message from the Yearbook Editor
Allan Rae has taken on the Editorial duties for Orchids 2021. Allan reports that planning for next year’s edition is underway with the featured orchids being the Oncidium Alliance. If you are keen on these Allan would love to hear from you. Allan also needs other contributions to fill the pages.

Please give thought to what you might contribute – many will have interesting things to write about their orchid experiences, knowledge, expertise, growing and breeding etc. With award numbers being down due to cancelled meetings and shows there will be plenty of room for articles. There have been a number of societies celebrating anniversaries this year, a half page article and a photograph would be appreciated. We also like to include Vales for well-known orchid personalities. Please send contributions to Allan Rae via email.

Lycaste – Seed Technology Research Centre, Massey University
I reported in last month’s newsletter that Craig McGill of the Seed Technology Research Centre is after seed for Lycaste cochleata, cruenta, deppei, dowiana, lasioglossa, macrophylla and virginalis to assist a student with her research. There have been no offers of help to date so if you are interested in helping please email Geraldine Wood on for more details, she would love to hear from you.

South Island Judges’ Seminar
Nelson will be hosting the South Island Judging Seminar over Labour Weekend, 24th & 25th October. The Guest Speaker is Selwyn Hatrick who has been advertised as, “Paphiopedilum Grower and Clay Pot Extraordinaire”. There could be plants and pots for sale. See the tentative programme and registration form here.

Iwitahi Annual Summer Camp
The 2020 camp will be held on the 5th & 6th December working from Sika Lodge. I attended last year’s camp for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you have an interest in seeing how NZ native orchids grow and don’t mind doing a bit of work on the reserve please consider coming along. For more information email Keith Smart, also see the Home page of this website.

Pleione – Blue Mountain Nurseries
Recently Blue Mountain Nurseries approached OCNZ about advertising Pleione. They advise that their Pleione season has just finished for the year but they would like to encourage people to pre-order for 2021 to speed up deliveries so that they can enjoy these “little sweeties” longer. See their online catalogue here.
