Taranaki Summer Show
We have received the news that the Taranaki Show in January has been cancelled, this has always been a highlight of the orchid calendar. With the uncertainty of the traffic light system a decision was made to cancel. The dates for 2023 are already on our Show Dates page for those wishing to plan ahead.
Covid Traffic Light System
For more on the traffic light system, please access the information here. These come into effect from 11.59pm on 2 December and we understand these will be reviewed every two weeks. When planning next year’s society meetings and shows please check the settings in your area to ensure you are in compliance with the Government rules.
OCNZ Website
Work goes on continuously in the background of the website to keep it full of up-to-date information. We would encourage you to explore the various pages, whether it’s an interest in Cultural Notes or what orchids have been awarded so far this year. Once on the page there is an archive of awards from previous years. The mysteries of Judging are explained here and if you think you have a plant worthy of being judged, please get in touch with your local panel. You can find out the latest news on Iwitahi which is a Heritage Protection Area here.
Reminder for Articles for the Yearbook
Please give some time over the summer to writing a Yearbook article! The featured genus will be Cymbidium, so articles about their history, growing, hybridising, etc will be welcomed. But of course, we would welcome pieces about anything else to do with orchids. Please give thought to what you might contribute – many will have interesting things to write about their orchid experiences, knowledge, expertise, growing and breeding etc. We also like to include Vales for well-known orchid personalities.
The deadline for material is the end of February 2022, but early receipt always appreciated. We had an excellent response last year, and managed to fill 82 pages – hopefully we can do the same again this time! Please send contributions to Allan Rae via email.
The Orchid Council of New Zealand wishes you all a very happy and relaxing Christmas and New Year. We hope to catch up with many of you again during 2022.
