OCNZ Newsletter: March 2019

The recent heatwave has been very challenging for orchids and their growers alike. I hope you are coping well and of course our thoughts go out to the people in the Nelson Tasman area. What a tremendous job the fire and emergency people are doing.

2018 Orchid Awards of the Year
In early February the Committee on Awards (COA) met and is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 Awards. Congratulations to the following people for their magnificent orchids. Photographs will be in the 2019 Yearbook which will be available mid-year.

Cymbidium of the Year: Cymbidium Radiant Ruby ‘Aussie Gem’ – grown by Ninox Orchids, Whangarei
Cultural Award of the Year: Fredclarkeara After Dark ‘Leroy’ – grown by Leroy Orchids, Waitakere
This year the COA also gave out a Special Merit Award for Outstanding Culture: Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann ‘Buckleberry’ – grown by Barry Curtis, Tauranga

Getting Plants Awarded
You don’t have to wait for an orchid show to have a plant awarded. If you have an orchid that you think is worthy of a quality or cultural award you can contact your local judging panel. The panel chair will arrange a time and a group of judges to assess your plant. Click on the Judges & Awards tab at the top of this page to see the local panel chairs.

OCNZ Executive Committee Nomination Forms
All Society Secretaries: please note you will receive nomination forms in the next two days.

2019 National Orchid Expo: September 19-22
Club Trading Table
Bryan Sharpe from the Waitakere Orchid Club is running the club trading at the Expo. This is run as a service to orchid society members who have a few good quality plants that they would like to sell. Please do make use of this facility. Bryan has written an information sheet which tells you what you need to do if you would like to sell plants. Please see the separate attachment which accompanies this newsletter.
Expo Registrations
Expo preparations are progressing well. Registrations recently opened with early bird registrations closing on March 31. Apologies if you didn’t receive a separate email from me in mid-February with the registration details; my email was misbehaving. If you didn’t get that information please go onto the Expo website where you can download a registration handbook. The Show Schedule is coming soon.
Any queries to the Expo Organising Committee.
