The National OCNZ Judges Seminar and AGM hosted by the Whangarei Orchid Society over a very wet Queen’s Birthday weekend was very enjoyable. Society members looked after the registrants and visitors well while at the same time holding an attractive show for the public. Margaret Lomas put together a very interesting programme for the judges which generated some good discussion. Kevin Butler, the guest speaker from Western Australia, gave four presentations about his orchid breeding programmes, together with some judging advice. However, I think the jury is still out on perloric cymbidiums.

During the Saturday night dinner Lex and Julie Sharp were presented with the Orchid of the Year Award and the George Fuller Trophy for Paphiopedilum Onyx ‘Anya’. They were over the moon to get this. Kevin Butler gave us a short after dinner presentation on his recent trip to Uganda where he viewed gorillas in the wild and for some reason there was a lot of hilarity while the raffle tickets were sold.

2018 AGM
The AGM was relatively short this year as there were no remits to discuss and no voting required for executive positions. The new OCNZ Executive comprises:
President – Margaret Lomas; Immediate Past President – Ruth Coles; Vice-President – Glenys MacRae; Secretary – Jeanette Hewer; Treasurer – Chris Hubbert; Executive Committee – Joy Hopson, Bill Liddy, Gillian Lyster, Allan Rae and Keith Smart.

Congratulations to all and we thank Ruth for her time as president over the last two years. Wes Ross-Taylor agreed to continue as the OCNZ Patron, which he feels very honoured to be. It was great that Wes and Christine were able to join us over the weekend.

2018 Orchid Yearbooks
Yearbooks have been distributed. We have come across a couple of production errors but we are not sure how widespread the problems are so when you receive your yearbook please check if you’ve got page 70 & 71 twice and are missing pages 73 & 74, also some of the photos are very dark. We have got spare copies and can offer a replacement if your book is defective. Although the yearbook is proofread the odd error always gets through; sincere apologies to NZOS; owners’ names have not been listed beside the awarded plants and apologies to Irene McGregor who was incorrectly listed as Mary Jones in the Waitakere Orchid Club photos taken at the NZ Flower & Garden Show last year.

MPI Project
We are still after old orchid lists and catalogues, in particular those that list species. We have a full set of L&R catalogues but could do with some others like Sunray Orchids, House of Orchids and Keith Goodwin.
