OCNZ Newsletter: July 2020

Happy July – we are half way through the year! Since moving into Level 1 Orchid Societies have been able to resume meetings and organise their winter and spring shows. Please do check the Orchid Council website for show dates and please support the shows in your area. The OCNZ judges are looking forward to seeing your orchids and hope that many will be of award quality.

Yearbook – Orchids 2020
Orchids 2020 was recently distributed to orchid societies, we hope you will enjoy the articles and the 2019 award photos. The book is proofread several times before it goes to print but as you know with the best of intentions an error can still slip through. OCNZ does apologise for this and brings the following corrections to your attention:

  • Page 6. An update rather than a correction; we were recently advised that Colin McKenzie didn’t actually serve as Secretary on the Otago Orchid Club Committee
  • Page 55. The names Dendrobium My Sweet ‘Wink’ and Dendrobium Oriental Smile ‘Fantasy’ have been matched up to the wrong photos, it should be the other way around.

MPI Project Update
Murray Dawson from the Royal NZ Institute of Horticulture successfully obtained funding for a project called “Taking Stock: Resolving NZ’s Cultivated Plants Problem”, which OCNZ has agreed to be a collaborator. A link to the project brief can be found on the OCNZ website in the MPI Annual Report which is located under the News & Events tab. The data I took out of the orchid catalogues which many of you loaned during 2018 will be very useful for this project. You may be interested to know that Murray was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list as a Member of the NZ Order of Merit for services to horticulture.

Orchidwiz Zoom Meeting
Alex, the owner and developer of the Orchidwiz programme, has kindly offered a Zoom Meeting to be held on Sunday, July 12 at 3pm. Topics covered will include looking at the most hybridised orchids over the last decade and examining family trees and genealogy to determine trait inheritance. Numbers are limited to 20 on a first-come first-served basis. Chris Hubbert is co-ordinating the NZ link, if you would like to participate please email Chris.

Iwitahi Annual Summer Camp
The 2020 camp will be held on December 5 and 6 working from Sika Lodge. I attended last year’s camp for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you have an interest in seeing how NZ native orchids grow and don’t mind doing a bit of work on the reserve please consider coming along. For more information email Keith Smart; also see the OCNZ website, www.orchidcouncil.org.nz

2021 Judges’ Seminar & OCNZ AGM
A note for your diaries; next year’s Judges’ Seminar and the OCNZ AGM will be held over Queen’s Birthday Weekend, hosted by the Howick Orchid Society.
