OCNZ newsletter: July 2019

Orchids 2019 was distributed to Society Secretaries during June. We do hope that you are enjoying the news and articles contained within it. If your society hasn’t received its books please let us know. There are a couple of corrections to make and one show date has changed since the Yearbook went to print. Please note down these changes:
Wanganui Orchid Society Show: October 5-6 (Sat-Sun), October 6-7
Waitakere Orchid Club 2020 Ribbon Show: February 22 (Sat), not March 8
Waitakere Orchid Club secretary: 303 Hobsonville Road (not Hobsonville Rata Road).

2019 National Orchid Expo
The Organising Committee reports that all is progressing well. There has been a good response for display and commercial spaces but there are still a few available so there is still an opportunity to be involved. Bookings for the Saturday night dinner are close to capacity. If you haven’t registered for dinner yet best get your name in quickly or you may miss out. If you have any questions about the Expo please don’t hesitate to email the Organising Committee.

Farewell Otago Orchid Club
Regretfully the Otago Orchid Club is being wound up. This was a very tough decision for club members to make but having battled for several years to keep the club afloat it was no longer viable. Hopefully the last remaining members will maintain their interest in orchid culture. OCNZ hopes that we will still see some of you at orchid shows around the country. In recent years there has been a number of Orchid Societies fold. OCNZ is in the process of investigating how they can keep orchid growers, who no longer have a society in their area, involved in the orchid scene. We will have details for you later in the year.

Vale Grahame Leafberg
We were sad to hear that Grahame had passed away on June 9. Grahame was a member and great supporter of all the Orchid Societies in the Auckland area. Grahame was often present at other shows around the country such as the Bay of Plenty Show in Te Puke and the Taranaki Summer Show. He grew magnificent plants receiving many awards, in fact there is an article in Orchids 2018 detailing Grahame’s achievements. Grahame was always generous with his knowledge and plants, he will be greatly missed. We extend our condolences to Ruth and family.
