OCNZ newsletter: April 2020

Here we are in Covid-19 lockdown. I hope you are keeping well and finding plenty to do around the home and in your orchid house. There will be lots of time to repot and pamper the orchids this year but sadly it seems unlikely now, that there will be opportunities to show them.

Facebookers: Please share photos of your flowering plants so that others can admire them and maybe ask some culture questions while club meetings and orchid shows are on hold. For the non-Facebookers try phoning or emailing a club member from time to time to maintain that connection. I’m part of a small email group that keeps tabs on family and friends, it’s great fun and interesting to read how others occupy their time.

OCNZ would like to thank Sandra Simpson from the Tauranga Orchid Society for writing some words of advice for orchid societies on keeping themselves and others safe during Covid-19. Those words are now on the OCNZ website.

Message from the Webmaster – Shows
If any Society cancels its show(s) please notify the OCNZ webmaster as soon as possible please so that the cancellation can be noted on the website “shows” page.

Reminder – OCNZ Nominations
OCNZ Nomination forms must be in the hands of the OCNZ Secretary by April 15. If your Society hasn’t submitted its nominations yet please could you attend to it? The election will be by postal ballot this year due to the cancellation of the National Judges’ Seminar and AGM weekend.

Orchid Supplies NZ Ltd
Barry Baxter from the Waitakere Orchid Club has bought the pot business off Bill Liddy’s Napier Orchid Supplies Ltd and will be in operation from April 1. Barry’s contact details are: Mobile 021 239 1774 or email Barry. He will assist you with your requirements in any way he can so please do get in touch.

On another note we’d like to thank Bill for his many years of pot and accessory supply. We will miss seeing your white van loaded to the gunwales but I’m sure we will still see you around the traps when we are allowed to leave our bubbles.

Bioleaf – Greg & Lyn Barnes
Greg has advised that they are able to ship products for the time being. If your stock of orchid food is getting low, now would be a good time to place an order by email. I’m not sure what the position is with other suppliers so if you have someone you regularly buy off it might pay to contact them to find out if they are able to supply during lockdown.

Stay safe in your bubble,
Glenys MacRae
