OCNZ NEWSLETTER: SEPTEMBER 2021

Here we go again with meetings, sales and shows being cancelled. Plans all up in the air. Hopefully by the time this goes out ‘The Team of Five Million’ will have risen to the challenge once again and the number of cases and locations will be on the downwards slope to elimination. We hope you’re all keeping safe and that your orchids are receiving much more attention. Please stay safe and well in your bubbles.

Speaker Tour 2021
Sponsored by the OCNZ Ross Bicknell travelled to three cities: Tauranga, Hamilton and Auckland. Ross is one of the few people in the world who is hybridising Pleione orchids, a relatively easy-to-grow terrestrial bulb with a winter dormancy. A piece about Ross and his tour was carried in the weekly e-newsletter ‘Get Growing’ (NZ Gardener) that goes to thousands of subscribers.

Vales
Barry Curtis: Tauranga Orchid Society life member and immediate past president, Barry passed away on August 25. He is remembered fondly by TOS as a wonderful human being and sadly missed by all who knew him. “His service to our club and personal encouragement and support of members will always be remembered – as will his glorious orchids. Our sincere condolences and love go to Libby and family.”

Brian Main: OCNZ was saddened to hear of Brian Main’s passing on August 1. Brian was a member of NZOS and the Howick Orchid Society, and was an Orchid Judge in the NZOS judging system. Those who have been in the orchid world for a long time will remember Brian exhibiting and selling gorgeous Phalaenopsis. Brian was 93. OCNZ sends their condolences to Jean and family.
